In dreams, light symbolizes awareness. Because of the light provided within your environment, you are able to be aware of your surroundings and what is going on around you. If there was no light you would have no awareness of what is going on around you. This is reflected into the awareness within your mind. The amount of light within the dream will be a direct reflection of how aware you are of what is being conveyed within the dream. The more awareness you have of your existence within your dreams the more bright and vibrant things will become. The more light within your dream the easier it should be to identify what your dream is reflecting of what is occurring within your mind during your waking life. Darkness will represent unawareness, the things within your mind that you are unawareness. The level of light within a dream will directly reflect your level of awareness. That is why we fall into fear when darkness is concerned. Because fear is always a matter of unawareness. The more darkness within a dream does not mean that fear is present, but for many, experiencing darkness within their dream can open the door to fear. Just as, the more this individual would experience fearful thoughts within their waking mind.
