In the Language of Mind, a lover is never the person beside you in waking life — it is the aspect of yourself you are most drawn to draw close to, the beloved part you are learning to unite with and commit to. Look at the form and function: a lover is the one you choose to be intimate with, to merge with, to give yourself to fully; and intimacy is the act of two becoming one. So your subconscious is showing you an inner union — your conscious, reasoning self and your receptive, intuitive self leaning toward each other, the deepening self-love and self-commitment from which all real creation is born. Examine where in your waking life you are finally embracing a quality of your own you once kept at arm's length.

Read the variations closely. A passionate, tender lover = an inner partnership in harmony, conscious and subconscious creating together; a distant, cold, or quarreling lover = a part of yourself you are withholding love from, a union still unconsummated. Notice whether the lover is a stranger — an unknown aspect you are only now welcoming — or a familiar face you already half-recognize. That is one figure, decoded. The room you met them in, the water you walked through to reach them, the light or dark around you — all of it is still speaking the same sentence.
