Face iconIdentity and self awareness

The people in our dreams will represent the different CHARACTER-istics within our PERSON- ality. We all are capable of being loving, responsible, angry, vengeful, giving, outgoing, spiteful, jealous, etc. The different people within our dreams will reflect these different aspects of our consciousness.

Your subconscious mind will use the identity of specific people to help you identify which aspect of your own personality that it is providing you with a message about. But we do not always recognize the people in our dreams. Sometimes we recognize them and have a sense of who they are even when they do not look like the person.

Remember, your dreams are a direct reflection of how you are using your mind. The level of familiarity that you have of the person in the dream will reflect the level of familiarity that you have of the aspect within yourself that the person is representing. For example, if you have dreams about your friends and family, it represents that you are familiar with those aspects within yourself. Familiar aspects are what comes to mind if someone were to ask you to describe your personality. You would describe the different aspects that you are most familiar with and most aware of.

We often will have dreams of strangers. These will represent aspects within ourselves that we are less familiar with. Often these aspects are unrecognizable and we must rely on them showing us what they represent rather than being able to look at them and recognize them. In these instances you will want to look at their actions as well as your intuitive sense of who they are and what type of person they are. Are they agitate, confrontational, shy, etc?

If they have a face you should still be able to identify these parts of yourself even if they are not very familiar. If they have a face then you should still be able to, with effort, identify these qualities within yourself. Sometimes the people in our dreams do not have a face. This will represent a lower sense of self awareness. The aspects that we are portraying throughout the day are difficult for us to identify within ourselves. This is because the face will represent our identity.

The face is the form, and the function of a face is to identify someone. That is why they put a picture of your face on your ID. The etymology of the term ID comes from identity. If you break that word down even further you get id-entity. Your identity is your ego. In psychology they call the ego the id. Because your identity is the entity of your id. So if the people in your dreams never have faces then your dreams are trying to tell you that you have a low sense of self- awareness and need to find your identity and begin to put more effort into knowing who you truly are.

Back to the level of familiarity you have with the people in your dreams. We talked about how family and friends in a dream will represent aspects that you are familiar with and that strangers will represent aspects that you are unfamiliar with.

But there are levels to this unfamiliarity. For example, if you meet a stranger at a cafe, it wouldn’t take much effort to spark up a conversation and start to get to know them. But if you are a person in America who speaks English, and an Asian person from the Philippines walked in speaking Tagalog, it would take a tremendous amount of effort to get to know them. Everything about them would be foreign to you, their language, their style, their culture. When you dream of foreign people, this will represent your subconscious mind trying to shed light on an aspect within your personality that came to the surface recently that you are foreign to.

Imagine you are a person who is very introverted. Someone who never goes out of their way to engage with someone and even when someone engages with them, they seldom even entertain that. If a shy or introverted person showed up in their dream, they would probably show up as a friend or family member, because they are familiar with the quality of being shy. If a talkative person showed up in their dream it would probably show up as a stranger. Because even though they are not like this, they could easily become talkative in the right setting and about the right subject. But becoming someone who enjoys going to parties or social events is completely foreign to them. It would take a long time to become comfortable and get to know that part of themselves. Even though they are capable of doing it, that is completely foreign to their personality.

Now imagine that person being the one throwing the party, hosting the party, sending out invites, and even leading the group through activities during the party. Not only would this feel foreign to this person, it would be completely out of this world to how they normally act and conduct themselves. This would be reflected within their dreams as an ALIEN! An aspect that is so foreign that it is completely out of this world compared to how they normally act.

This is how you can use just the level of familiarity of the person in your dream to extract even more information to decoding and interpreting the message held within the dream.
