Your Anxiety Is Not About Your Life. It Is About Your Attention.

Anxiety is what the mind feels like when attention is scattered — split between tomorrow’s conversation, last week’s mistake and ten things that have not happened. Bring your full attention into the present moment and anxiety has nowhere to stand. That is a skill, and anyone can learn it.

✦ The Problem

You Have Been Working On The Feeling, Not The Cause

The racing heart, the loop of what-ifs, the replay at three in the morning — these are effects. The cause sits one level up: an attention that has never been trained to stay where you put it. Untrained attention goes wherever it is pulled, and it is pulled toward everything that could go wrong.

✦ How It Works

Train Attention Like A Muscle, In A Fixed Order

Attention, memory and imagination are the three powers of the conscious mind, and each is trained the same way: a short daily exercise against resistance that rises. The practice starts with observation, builds concentration on a single point, then trains memory — and every step strengthens your control over where your attention goes.

The mirror: observe without being dragged

Sit in front of a real mirror and watch your own face without performing or fixing anything. You are practising the one act anxiety makes impossible: noticing what arises without being carried off by it.

The candle: hold one point

Hold your attention on a single flame. Each time your mind wanders, you mark it. The count is honest, and as the weeks pass it falls — your concentration developing, measured rather than hoped for.

The memory exercise: gather it back

Walk back through yesterday in full detail, then three days, then five, then seven. Attention that can gather a whole day back into view is attention you direct, instead of attention that directs you.

✦ What It Is Worth

Eliminate Anxiety From Your Experience, At The Root

Calming techniques quiet the symptom for an afternoon. Training attention removes the ground the symptom stands on. When your attention rests in the present moment there is no future for fear to rehearse, and a trained faculty stays trained. That is how anxiety is permanently alleviated rather than managed: the cause changes, so the effect does too.

The daily practice — the mirror, candle and memory exercises — is free and permanent inside CHITTA. The exercises open in sequence as you build the earlier ones, because the order is the method.

Questions People Ask First

What is the mental cause of anxiety?

Scattered attention. Anxiety is the conscious mind’s attention split between what has not happened yet and what already did, with too little left in the present moment where your life is actually taking place. Gather attention back into the present and the anxious state has nothing to feed on.

Does this help with ADD or trouble focusing?

Yes. Trouble focusing is trouble directing attention, and attention is a faculty that responds to training. The concentration exercise counts how often your mind wanders and gives you a daily repetition in bringing it back. Anyone can learn to do it, and the count shows you whether you are.

Does this replace a doctor or medication?

No. This is training for the conscious mind, the way exercise trains the body — not medical treatment. If anxiety is severe, or you are in crisis, speak to a doctor or a crisis line; the practice works alongside that care, not instead of it.
